1996 में वर्ल्ड वाइड वेब का जन्म हुआ। दुनिया का पहले वेब ब्राउज़र नेटस्केप (Netscape) था। क्योंकि वर्ल्ड वाइड वेब जानकारी का बहुत बड़ा स्थान था। इसलिए उस समय बहुत सारे सर्च इंजन थे। पर उनमें से अल्टाविस्टा (Altavista) एक बहुत मशहूर सर्च इंजन था।

परन्तु जब लैरी पेज और सेर्गेई ब्रिन जो कि अपने पीएचडी के दौरान इससे रिलेटेड प्रोजेक्ट्स पर काम कर रहे थे, सर्च इंजन के मौजूदा हालात को देखा तो वो काफी हैरान हुए। क्योंकि सर्च इंजन रेलेवेंट सर्च रिजल्ट नही दे रहे थे। सवाल कुछ पूछो तो जवाब कुछ और ही मिलता। 

उस समय लैरी पेज ने बहुत ही इनोवेटिव प्रोग्राम डिजाइन किया। जो कि आज के Google का नींव था। जिसका नाम पेजरैंक था। इसे अगर आसान शब्दों में बताऊं। तो जैसे अपने किसी क्वेरी के बारे में सर्च किया। जैसे शिवाजी महाराज के बारे में। अब इंटरनेट पर लाखों वेब पेज उपलब्ध हैं । जिसमे कुछ इससे अधिक रेलेवेंट है, कुछ कम रेलेवेंट हैं और कुछ बहुत ही कम रेलेवेंट हैं। 

अब पहले के सर्च इंजन कुछ ऐसे सर्च करते थे। कि अगर अपने शिवाजी महाराज के बारे में कुछ सर्च किया, तो बिना किसी ऑर्डर के सारी जानकारी रेलेवेंट और इरेलिवेंट दिखा देते थे। इससे सर्च करने वाले का उद्देश्य पूरा नहीं हो पाता। क्योंकि उस अपने टॉपिक पर सर्च किए जानकारी का रिजल्ट तुरंत नहीं मिलता। 

यहां पर लैरी पेज ने एक इनोवेटिव प्रोग्राम पेजरैंक बनाया। जो सर्च करी से मिलते जुलते रिजल्ट को रैंक करता था। रैंक करने का मापदंड होता था वह लिंक जिसे लोग ज्यादा एक्सेस कर रहे हैं। वो ज्यादा ऊपर रैंक होते थे।

लैरी पेज ने अपने लास्ट रैंक पेज रैंकिंग का इस्तेमाल करते हुए बनाए आई प्रोग्राम का नाम पेजरैंक (Pagerank) रखा। और इसके आधार पर बनाया गया सर्च इंजन का नाम Backrub रखा। सुनने में ये पेजरैंक प्रोग्राम बहुत साधारण लग रहा है। पर ये उस समय का बहुत ही योग्य और क्रांतिकारी सर्च इंजन था। जो सर्च के तरीके को ही बदलने वाला था। 

एक क्रांतिकारी खोज इंजन का जन्म हुआ - Googol

 

लैरी पेज और सेर्गेई ब्रिन ने पेजरैंक प्रोग्राम का इस्तेमाल करते हुए बनाए गए सर्च इंजन Backrub का नाम बदल कर कुछ यूनिक और कैची नाम रखने का सोचा। लैरी पेज ने बहुत सारे नाम सोचे पर उन्हें कोई भी यूनिक और कैची नाम नहीं मिला। तो उन्होंने अपने कार्यालय के साथी सीन को नाम सुझाने को कहा जो यूनिक और कैची हो। 

उन तीनों के बीच कई दिनों तक चर्चा हुई। पर उन्हें कोई भी नाम अच्छा नहीं लगा। तब आखिरकार सीन ने एक नाम सुझाया Googleplex। जिसका मतलब था विशाल संख्या। और उनका सर्च इंजन भी कुछ ऐसा ही काम करने वाले था, बड़ी संख्या में वेबसाइट का अनुक्रमण। ये नाम उन्हें अच्छा लगा। पर उन्हें कोई छोटा नाम चाहिए था। 

तो उन्होंने उसी से मिलता जुलता नाम बताया Googol, जिसका मतलब था “और एक बड़ी संख्या भी”। इसके अलावा अगर आप 1 के पीछे 100 ज़ीरो लगा दें तो जो संख्या आती है, उस Googol कहते हैं। सीन ने Googol डोमेन नेम के सर्च किया। और उन्होंने Googol डोमेन रजिस्टर्ड भी क्या दिया। पर यहां पर एक गलती हुई। 

जो नाम उन्होंने सुनिश्चित किया था वह था Googol। पर सीन ने डोमेन नेम रजिस्टर करते हुए Googol को गलती से गलत टाइप कर Google कर दिया। और डोमेन नेम भी Google के नाम से रजिस्टर कर दिया। तो इस तरह से Google का जन्म हुआ। 

इस लिए Google का कोई फुल फॉर्म नहीं हैं। यह एक नाम है जो गलती से Google को मिला है।
