ISRO was founded by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai on the Independence Day in the year 1969. Therefore, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is also called the father of ISRO. ISRO launched the first missile on 19 April 1975 named Aryabhata. But at that time India did not have a launch vehicle so Russia helped India and India launched its first satellite.

ISRO is the only department of the Government of India which is never in deficit.
By 1979, India was able to make fully indigenous satellite but still depended on other countries to launch the satellite. India launched the first Swadesi satellite SLV 3 on 18 July 1980 and the director of the project was APJ Abdul Kalam. You will be proud to know that India, along with America, Japan, Russia, China, France, are among the countries in the world who have the ability to build and launch satellites in their country.

ISRO has two main satellite launch vehicles.
First PSLV ( Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and second GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle).
PSLV is used to launch small and light weight satellites. GSLV is used to launch large and heavy satellites.
Moon Mission:-
ISRO did a Chandrayaan mission in 2008. ISRO launched unmanned satellite under Chandrayaan 1 mission. Chandrayaan 1 was launched on 22 October 2008 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center. Scientists believed that Chandrayaan would work for 1 to 2 years. But the unfortunately Chandrayaan came to an end in 10 months only after the loss of contact with Chandrayaan in August 2009. But in these ten months, Chandrayaan had completed 95% of his work. Because of Chandrayaan, India became the first country in the world to find water on the moon. The total expenditure of Chandrayaan was 386 crores.

Mars Mission:-
Five years later, in 2013, ISRO started a Mars mission. As part of the Mars mission, ISRO sent a satellite to Mars on 5 November 2013, which successfully reached orbit on 24 September 2014 after 298 days of travel. With this, India became the first country to reach Mars in the first attempt. India is the first country in Asia to reach Mars because earlier China and Japan had tried unsuccessfully to reach Mars.

World Record by ISRO:-
ISRO placed 104 satellites into Earth's orbit on 15 February 2017 via PSLV C-37. And set the world record for launching the most satellites at one time.

इसरो की स्थापना डॉ. विक्रम साराभाई ने वर्ष 1969 में स्वतंत्रता दिवस के दिन की। इसलिए डॉ विक्रम साराभाई को इसरो का जनक भी कहते हैं। इसरो ने पहला मिसाईल 19 अप्रैल 1975 को लॉन्च किया था जिसका नाम आर्यभट था। पर उस समय भारत के पास लॉन्च व्हेकिल नहीं था इसलिए रूस ने भारत की मदद की और भारत ने अपना पहला सैटेलाइट लॉन्च किया।

इसरो भारत सरकार की एकमात्र ऐसी डिपार्टमेंट है जो कभी घाटे में नहीं है।
वर्ष 1979 तक इंडिया पूर्ण स्वदेशी सैटेलाइट बनाने में तो सक्षम हो गया था पर तब भी सैटेलाइट लॉन्च करने के लिए दूसरे देशों पर निर्भर था। भारत ने 18 जुलाई 1980 को पहला स्वदेशी उपग्रह SLV 3 लॉन्च किया और इस प्रोजेक्ट के डायरेक्टर एपीजे अब्दुल कलाम थे। आप को यह जनके गौरव होगा की अमेरिका, जापान, रूस, चीन, फ्रांस के साथ भारत विश्व के उन देशों में शीमिल है जो अपने देश में सैटेलाइट बनाने और उसे लॉन्च करने की क्षमता रखते हैं।
इसरो के पास दो मुख्य सेटलाइट लॉन्च व्हेकिल हैं।
पहला PSLV ( Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) और दूसरा GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) .
PSLV का उपयोग छोटे तथा हल्के सैटेलाइट। को लॉन्च करने के लिए तथा GSLV का उपयोग बड़े तथा भारी सैटेलाइट को लॉन्च करने के लिए किया जाता है।

चंद्रयान 1 :-
इसरो ने साल 2008 में एक प्रोजेक्ट किया चंद्रयान मिशन। चंद्रयान 1 मिशन के अंतर्गत इसरो ने मानव रहित सैटेलाइट लॉन्च किया । चंद्रयान 1 को 22 अक्टूबर 2008 को सतीश धवन अंतरिक्ष केंद्र से लॉन्च किया गया। वैज्ञानिकों को का मानना था कि चंद्रयान 1 से 2 साल तक काम करेगा । परन्तु दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण चंद्रयान 10 महीनों में ही अगस्त 2009 को चंद्रयान से संपर्क टूटने के बाद ही इस मिशन का अंत हो गया । पर इन दस महीनों में ही चंद्रयान ने अपना 95% काम पूरा कर लिया था। चंद्रयान की वजह से भारत चांद पर पानी खोजने वाला विश्व का पहला देश बन गया था । चंद्रयान का कुल खर्च 386 करोड़ थी।

मिशन मंगल:-
पांच साल बाद 2013 में इसरो ने मंगल अभियान शुरु किया। मंगल अभियान के तहत इसरो ने 5 नवंबर 2013 को मंगल ग्रह की ओर एक सैटेलाइट भेजा जो 298 दिन की यात्रा के बाद 24 सितबर 2014 को मंगल ग्रह की कक्षा में पहुंच कर सफलतापूर्वक स्थापित हो गया। इसके साथ ही भारत पहले प्रयास में मंगल ग्रह पर पहुंचने वाला पहला देश बन गया। भारत मंगल ग्रह पर पहुंचने वाला एशिया का पहला देश है क्युकी इससे पहले चीन और जापान ने मंगल ग्रह तक पहुंचने की नाकामयाब कोशिश की थी।
